For those of us who were born in the 1990s, Queer As Folk is a classic American TV series. It was adapted from the original British TV series with the same title. It became a hit as soon as it was released. We will spare you from an introduction of the plot and its main characters, but we will touch upon why this TV series became so popular.

Debbie

1. Debbie, the supportive mom

One of the show’s major characters, Debbie, is Michael’s mother. She has a very sentimental side, yet she also brings everyone joy and laughter. Many classic lines come from her. As a mother of a gay son, she supports her child and his gay friends with action. She is like a magnet, connecting every character in the show.

2. Characters

As with Sex And The City, another TV series, each Queer As Folk’s character has their own distinctive personality. Michael is pure and has a heart of a maiden. Brian is hot stud, who has one night stands frequently. Ted is a reserved and cautious accountant. Emmett is a bit more effeminate. Justin is a younger gay guy. Lindsey and Melanie are the lesbians. These are mostly middle class characters, so the audience might feel more connected to them.

3. Exploring gay-related issues

In its give seasons, the show explored issues such as love, family relationships, friendship as well as gay marriage, adoption, surrogate, VIV/AIDS, sexual fantasy, bullying, and so on. The show allows the audience to deliberate on gay issues, which is why Queer As Folk caused so much response and discussion.

If you have seen the show, watching it again will bring new feelings. If you have not, we recommend it!
