“Tai-keness”, A Trend You Have to Know
Ever since the Taiwanese boy band, 911, took stage in Taipei Arena for their concert and took part in TV commercials, the negative images associated with Tai-ke in the past have been reversed. Sub-culture in the past, with mass communication media, is now approaching the mainstream culture.
Tai-ke Images, Taiwan’s New Trend
It is not uncommon for people to look for the types dissimilar to those found in their family or social circles as the ideal partners. Past impressions about Tai-ke culture were usually linked to vulgarity (bad language and chewing betel nuts). More positively, Tai-ke would be associated with loyalty to friends, pampering their other half, sexual competence, etc. Music and movies have also helped reshape Tai-ke’s images. Many gay guys have also declared their affection for Tai-ke because they are known to look after their other half. In the gay community, in addition to “wolves”, “bears”, “monkeys”, perhaps Tai-ke will emerge as a popular type soon!
